Michael Conard has been interested in how design can engage global market forces for over three decades. His architectural and urban scale practice and research includes the development of sustainable ecological and investment systems, creating and enhancing public space to direct private investment, and evolving traditional architectural and urban paradigms to accommodate new development models. In addition to the Developing Strategies publication produced for the Design Trust, he is the co-editor and/or contributing co-editor of five books on strategies and provocations for engaging international emergent urbanism. He continues to teach the Prefiguration Seminar and co-teach the International Urban Design Studio in the GSAPP at Columbia University. His practice is as the senior principal in the firm Design + Urbanism Architectural, LLC.

Personal Statement

The Design Trust has established itself as a substantial vehicle to allow designers to share in substantive discussions about our present and future city. D+U’s early Design Trust project, Hell’s Kitchen South: Developing Strategies, provided the opportunity for small local neighborhood groups and local designers to participate in conceiving the future of their highly contested neighborhood. This collective body of architectural, urban design, and landscape research allowed the professionals that followed to think beyond clichés and conventional urban models and conceive the emerging Hell's Kitchen South as another example in a long line of unique urban New York City neighborhoods.
