Under the Elevated

In June 2013, a distinguished jury awarded the 2013 Photo Urbanism fellowship to Krisanne Johnson. The 2013 Photo Urbanism fellowship will focus on "life under and around elevated infrastructure in New York City" and the resulting photographs will inform the new Design Trust project, Under the Elevated.

A documentary photographer based in Brooklyn, Krisanne is interested in exploring the shared humanity of space under and around elevated infrastructure in New York City. Through her Photo Urbanism fellowship, Krisanne hopes to "tell the stories of the people who share these spaces and how the massive physical presence can foster and shape different kinds of social interaction."

The jury recognized two other photograhers as finalists for the 2013 Photo Urbanism Fellowship: Naho Kubota and Douglas Ljungkvist.

About Photo Urbanism Selection Jury
The Design Trust believes that photography is vital to understanding our shared environment, and is the most powerful tool for illuminating New York City's complex public realm. The Photo Urbanism program was founded in 2001 to support the creation of new work that explores the natural and built environment of New York City, and surpasses strictly editorial and documentary imagery.
